All senior journalists should know the law, said Mr Justice Saunders when sentencing the former editor of the News of the World to prison for phone hacking:
…no-one has suggested that the phone hacking which occurred in this case was justified. They all knew that it was contrary to the PCC code which governs the conduct of journalists and they all knew it was morally wrong. These Defendants have said that they did not realise that it was a criminal offence. Not only is ignorance of the law no defence but it seldom provides any mitigation. It is the duty of senior journalists to know the law particularly in so far as it affects their work.
